Socialism Claimed Millions. Now It's Coming for America.
Let me tell you what socialism is not. It is not a new idea. It is not a compassionate upgrade to capitalism. And it is not what the early church was doing in the book of Acts, no matter how many times you hear that argument on a Sunday morning.
Socialism is a system where the government controls the economy. The factories. The land. The hospitals. The schools. And eventually, the decisions that used to belong to you. That is not a conservative talking point. That is what the dictionary says. And more importantly, that is what history shows.
Venezuela sat on the largest oil reserves in the world. Within two decades of socialist governance, the country was in freefall. Families could not find food. Millions left. The infrastructure collapsed. The promises evaporated.
Cuba's healthcare system gets praised in certain academic circles, but the Cubans living under it know the truth. There are two systems. One for the party elite and foreign visitors. Another for everyone else. The Soviet Union. Zimbabwe. North Korea. You can change the country name and the decade. The pattern does not change.
Now here is where it gets personal for me as a pastor. Acts 2 describes believers voluntarily selling their possessions and sharing with those in need. Nobody was forced. Nobody was taxed. And Acts 5 settles the question plainly: "Didn't it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn't the money at your disposal?" (Acts 5:4, NIV). That is private property rights, right there in the passage people use to argue for socialism.
If the Church is going to argue that socialism is not the answer, then it has an obligation to actually be the answer. Not with statements. With presence.
