Real Name vs. Username: Understanding the Mantle You Already Have
You know the feeling. You hit the title you were after, or the follower count finally ticks past where you wanted it, and instead of feeling full, you feel a little hollow. That's not ingratitude. That's your soul telling you the scoreboard someone handed you was never built to measure who you actually are.
Long before we had job titles or social media handles, there was a different way of understanding calling. In the Old Testament, the prophet Elijah placed his cloak, his mantle, on Elisha's shoulders. That single act transferred more than a piece of clothing. It transferred purpose (2 Kings 2). The mantle was never about a resume line or a public reputation. It was about what Elisha did the moment he had it.
Most of us wait for the "ready" feeling before we step into what we're called to do. After surviving a shooting that changed the entire direction of my life, I didn't feel ready to stand in front of young people and talk honestly about gang violence and its cost. I did it anyway, because the mantle doesn't wait for you to feel qualified. It only waits for you to pick it up.
That's the difference between a scoreboard and a mantle. A scoreboard is something you earn over time, through performance and comparison. A mantle is something you're given, and its legitimacy is proven the moment you use it, not the moment someone applauds you for it.
Whether you're in your forties reevaluating everything, or younger and still figuring out what you're supposed to be doing with your life, the mantle doesn't come with an expiration date. Elisha didn't hesitate at the riverbank. He picked the cloak up right where Elijah left it and moved forward. You can do the same thing.
